Tinok Yarok: Organic Babies and Babes from Israel
Jan 4th, 2008 by Karin Kloosterman
When Sophie Ohana, from the UK, got pregnant in 2005, she started looking around Israel for organic clothing suppliers.
Lo and behold, her search was in vain, and she ended up shopping and shipping goods for her new babe from Britain.
Today she lives in Katzir, where Wadi Ara starts, and is now running a successful online organic baby clothes business called Tinok Yarok (”green baby”).
Naturally sweet, and comfy looking, the prices seem to be budgeted to the Israeli pocketbook.NIS 55 for baby body short sleeves
NIS 60 for a wrap with long sleeves
NIS 69 for trousers
NIS 95 for a nightgown
NIS 39 for a hat
Says Sophie, “All are made from 100% organic cotton manufactured by a company in India, that operates on a unique ecological industrial park in Gujarat.” For those interested, the company holds certification for manufacturing by SKAL Europe - EKO Sustainable Textile, and the cotton is also grown in India.
Sophie also offers organic cloth diapers, and cleaning products through Tinok Yarok. The cleaning products are made by Worx, a Canadian company. (We use Ecover for our clothes, but find it is not so effective, and would be interested to hear if anyone has experience with Worx or local brands.)
Sophie looked for an Israeli-based manufacturer but says, “it was hard to find companies that meet the standards I feel necessary.”
Sophie made Aliya to Israel in 1997 from England, where she grew up on an organic farm and in a very ecologically minded household, she says. (We can tell by the rosy glow of her cheeks). Topics of conversation around the dinner table “ran along the lines of CFCs etc,” she says.
Her dream is not much different than ours at Green Prophet: “To bring all the eco and organic options available here in Israel all together, so people can see and understand what is available to live a more aware lifestyle. And of course, my dream is to expand the collection of organic cotton clothes for babies & children, something I feel very strongly about.”Go Sophie!See related: Israeli Clothing Company Goes Green.::Tinok Yarok

great news! i hear there’s lots of organic cotton grown in Israel but it’s all/mostly exported.
green prophet readers in the UK can also buy certified organic cotton clothing from howies and greenfibres amongst others. most of their cotton comes from turkey, methinks.
Yep thats true and very frustrating that organic cotton is grown in Israel but all is exported, not a bit for local production. Hopefully with consumer demand on the increase we might succeed to keep a bit behind.
As for the Uk there are some really fantastic companies flying the organic banner, others include Cut4Cloth & Hug who import from India, Turkey & Egypt.
It is first time for me to hear about Tinok Yarok and Green Prophet. Now with a newborn baby girl in our family it’s sounds atractive to use orgabic-cotton clothes for the baby. Me myself started lately to use Ecover detergents in my carpets/upholstery/curtains cleaning services. The results are extrimly good!
